Adam Rex gives you a little "taste" (sorry that was bad) of how funny his book is with the title, Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich: And Other Stories You're Sure To Like, Because They're All About Monsters, and Some Of Them Are Also About Food. You Like Food, Don't You? Well, All Right Then. If that hasn't peaked some interest then I think the normally boring publication page will interest you with it's portrayal of "The Invisible Man Makes a Snow Angel, 1897". That's just the beginning of Adam Rex's creativity! The book starts out with Frankenstein hungry for a sandwich but missing the right ingredients, or really any for that matter. Don't worry, he eventually gets them...in comedic fashion. From there the book goes into multiple stories highlighting many different monsters. My personal favorite is the "The Phantom of the Opera" story line that keeps popping in... |
and out but I don't want to ruin the surprise. I do warn, however, that a certain song might get stuck in your head. Many stories will have your family reacting with a range of giggling to laughing out loud. There are some gross out moments but none that I feel go to far.
Should you read this?: I like the range of stories in this book. You could either read all the way through it or just read one short story if time is an issue.
Good Bedtime Read?: I might not read it at bedtime as your child might get wound up with all the laughing they will be doing AND/OR certain kids might struggle with what some of the creatures look like even though the stories are humorous.
Story Rating: Five out of Five Bananas as it is a hilariously well written story.
Art Rating: Five out of Five Paintbrushes. As an art teacher, I really appreciate how many different styles he uses to portray each story. He is a true master with oil paint :)
Grade/Age Level: ages 6 - 100.
Can I find it in the Primary School Library? Yes, ask Mrs. Pantzlaf and she will direct you to this glorious sandwich.
