Maurice Sendak's book "Where the Wild Things Are" turns 50 this year so I thought it would be fun for the 2nd graders to design their own "Wild Things". We read the book and then the 2nd graders sketched out ideas for their "Wild Things" by combining 2+ different animals. Then, they learned about a form of art called printmaking and the following terms: Plate, Brayer, Ink, and Prints. If you ask a 2nd grader, they should be able to explain what makes printmaking different from drawing a picture :) You can see some of the great examples below :)
The 2nd graders let their three prints dry and then learned how to matte them and labeled them in a "Wild" way. I had a basic idea for creating "Wild Things" but when I was searching for ideas, I came upon the Riverside Elementary Art Blog.
Stay Tuned for more art projects, book reviews, sketches, and an interview with Stephen McCranie answering 10 of our students' questions. He will be visiting our 1st and 2nd graders via Skype THIS FRIDAY !!!! I will have a little recap of the visit :)
