So what's up with the guy waving on the screen? That is author/illustrator Stephen McCranie who did presentations for both the 1st and 2nd graders through Skype. Skype allowed McCranie, who is from New Mexico, to interact with out 1st and 2nd graders. Stephen McCranie taught them a simple way to create a great story. You simply have to ask yourself two questions. 1) What does your character want? 2) What is preventing that character from getting it? He then went on to create stories with the students answering these two questions with some hilarious results. Then, Stephen went on to show students how they can draw anything as long as they look for the basic shapes they are made of. Lastly, he answered questions students had while drawing something they requested. Below is an example of what he did. Ask your child and I'm sure they will be able to tell you more!
1st and 2nd graders used basic shapes to draw their own versions of Mal and Chad and here are a couple examples.
You can check out more of the student's versions of Mal and Chad in the library. Stay tuned for a SIGNED MAL AND CHAD BOOK GIVEAWAY!
